Themed Curation: The Nursery (Edition 1)

During the nesting phases of my pregnancies, I thought a lot about the objects and art I remember decades later from my childhood. Our dining room had a large print of a Renaissance Madonna and Child; I loved the deep magenta of my stuffed Barney; and insisted on painting my room a saturated sky blue and using sapphire velvet bedspread.

I was eager to discover artists and work that I felt a personal connection to, to surround my children from the first moments in this world. How could I justify filling my kids walls with generic cherubic circus animals when the painted tender scenes of voluptuous mothers embracing their babies in vivid saris by Thota Vaikuntam exist? Being able to introduce them to the world of thought and care beyond cartoons and typically revered Western artists became a fun and important mission.

This catalogue is a curated collection of works from South Asian artists, that elicit the feelings of tenderness, amazement, protection, and joy of living that we get when amongst children. Slowly discover and build a visual world worthy of the people you are raising.
